Why this matters

Sand Harbor sits on Lake Tahoe's northeastern shore, known for its turquoise water and granite boulders — a beautiful setting that's also demanding on your skin. Visitors here face higher UV exposure than a typical beach day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need sunscreen if I'm in the shade?

Yes. Reflected light off water and sand still reaches you in shade, so sunscreen on exposed skin is still recommended even under an umbrella.

Is mineral sunscreen actually better for the lake?

Mineral sunscreens are generally considered a lower-impact option for water environments compared to some chemical formulas. Sunscreen choice is one part of protection — shade and clothing still come first.

Can I rely on sunscreen alone?

No single measure is complete protection on its own. Sunscreen works best as part of a layered approach — shade, clothing, and a hat first, sunscreen on whatever skin is still exposed.

Why does Tahoe feel different from other beaches?

The combination of elevation and reflection off the water means UV exposure here is higher than most visitors expect, even on cool or overcast days.

Does this apply to kids too?

Yes — children's skin is especially sensitive to UV exposure, and sun habits built early last a lifetime. The same shade-clothing-hat-sunscreen order applies, with extra attention to reapplication during play.
